History

The Rabot (1489-1491), also known as the three offices, is almost the only construction that remains of the 14 kilometre long ramparts. It is a lock that allows an area of 15 km2 to be underwater to keep enemies at a distance.

In the Middle Ages, each ship had to sail through the Rabot and could be controlled.

In 1860, a part of the Rabot was demolished to broaden the bridge. In 1872 the roadway was increased and became the end point of the Lieve within the city. After his decay, the Rabot became a powder warehouse, ice cellar, inn and even an electricity cabin.

The Rabot has been restored in collaboration with the City of Ghent by the service club "Round Table Gent 68 " which also has its 2-weekly meeting.
